Molybdenum market update on January 7, 2026
Domestic molybdenum prices rose strongly, with molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, ammonium heptamolybdate, and molybdenum powder prices increased by approximately RMB 200 per tonne-degree, RMB 5,000/ton, RMB 10,000/ton, and RMB 15/kg respectively. The substantial increase in molybdenum prices has attracted high attention from industry players.
From the bullish factors perspective, first, affected by high geopolitical risks, China's molybdenum product imports are limited; in addition, some molybdenum mining enterprises have reduced output due to increased production difficulty, further slowing the growth of spot market supply; second, against the background of substantial molybdenum price increases, good development trend in downstream industries, and increasingly prominent strategic metal status, downstream inquiry and procurement enthusiasm remains acceptable; third, molybdenum mining enterprises have significantly raised quotations, thereby driving other molybdenum product prices to follow upward. Recently, a mining enterprise in Luoyang sold 810 tonnes of molybdenum concentrate at transaction prices between RMB 4,090 per tonne-degree and RMB 4,205 per tonne-degree. From the bearish factors perspective, the substantial molybdenum price increase since New Year's Day has to a certain extent intensified buyers' fear-of-heights sentiment, thus future transaction pace may slow down.
On the news front: Recently, seven departments including the National Development and Reform Commission issued the "Action Plan for Promoting the Application of Recycled Materials". The plan mentions that by 2030, the waste recycling system will be further improved, standards and certification systems for promoting recycled materials application will be gradually established, annual recovery and utilization of scrap steel and waste paper will exceed 300 million tonnes and 80 million tonnes respectively, annual output of recycled non-ferrous metals and recycled plastics will exceed 25 million tonnes and 19.5 million tonnes respectively, the proportion of recycled materials substitution in automobiles, electrical and electronic products, textiles, packaging, and other fields will steadily increase, and the role of recycled materials application in ensuring resource security and promoting energy saving and carbon reduction will be further enhanced.
