Molybdenum market update on December 9, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market overall maintained a relatively strong operation. Under the mutual influence of bullish and bearish factors, the consumer market is gradually shifting from a buyer's market to a seller's market, mainly reflected in slight price increases for most products and enhanced confidence among industry players in the future market. Today, molybdenum concentrate and ferromolybdenum prices increased by approximately RMB 70 per tonne-degree and RMB 2,000/ton respectively.
From the bullish factors perspective, first, at the beginning of the month downstream users showed higher enthusiasm for entering the market to consume, which to a large extent boosted suppliers' confidence in raising quotations; recently, steel companies entering the market to tender for ferromolybdenum include Maanshan Iron & Steel, Heye Technology, Hengyang Valin Steel Tube, Jiangsu Nangang, and Shanxi Taigang, among others. Second, the international molybdenum price stopped falling and rebounded, providing a boost to the warming of the domestic molybdenum market. Third, supported by production costs, suppliers generally have low willingness to offer concessions for shipments.
From the bearish factors perspective, first, due to the complex and volatile global economic situation and flat performance in the steel market, steel enterprises still show obvious sentiment to press down ferromolybdenum procurement prices; second, with molybdenum manufacturers basically maintaining normal production, spot market supply growth is relatively fast, which is not conducive to molybdenum price increases.
On the news front, data from the China Iron and Steel Association show that in late November 2025, key statistical steel enterprises produced a total of 18.18 million tons of crude steel, with an average daily output of 1.818 million tons, daily output decreased by 6.4% month-on-month. By region, Northeast region crude steel daily output decreased by 30,000 tons, North China region crude steel daily output decreased by 59,000 tons, East China region crude steel daily output decreased by 44,000 tons, Northwest region crude steel daily output decreased by 15,000 tons, Central and South China region crude steel daily output decreased by 12,000 tons, and Southwest region crude steel daily output increased by 8,000 tons.
