Molybdenum market update on September 16, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market continues to exhibit a generally weak performance trend. With low enthusiasm for inquiries and purchases from downstream users and slightly insufficient confidence in price stability among suppliers, prices of some products have continued to decline, with molybdenum concentrate and ferromolybdenum prices decreasing by approximately 20 yuan per ton-unit and 1,000 yuan per ton, respectively.
In the molybdenum concentrate market, influenced by reduced downstream inquiry volumes, the gradual weakening of previous favorable supports, and a lackluster international molybdenum market, supplier quotes have been adjusted downward, with product prices falling below the 4,500 yuan per ton-unit threshold. In the ferromolybdenum market, although molybdenum concentrate prices have oscillated downward in recent days, the decline has been limited, keeping raw material prices relatively high. Combined with low steel bidding prices, intermediate smelting enterprises are facing significant operational pressure. In the molybdenum chemical products and derivatives market, the trading atmosphere remains relatively subdued. Amid poor upstream market performance, strong production cost support, and terminal customers primarily driven by rigid demand, holders generally maintain rational pricing.
In terms of news, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, in August 2025, China’s crude steel production reached 77.37 million tons, decreased by 0.7% year-on-year; pig iron production reached 69.79 million tons, increased by 1.0% year-on-year; and steel product output reached 122.77 million tons, increased by 9.7% year-on-year. From January to August, China’s cumulative crude steel production reached 671.81 million tons, decreased by 2.8% year-on-year; pig iron production reached 579.07 million tons, decreased by 1.1% year-on-year; and steel product output reached 982.17 million tons, increased by 5.5% year-on-year.
