Molybdenum market update on June 13, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market is currently in a high-level stalemate phase, with a mix of bullish and bearish factors leading to a somewhat stagnant negotiation atmosphere between buyers and sellers. Product prices remain relatively stable, and actual transaction volumes are moderate. According to CTIA GROUP LTD, influenced by the recent significant rise in molybdenum raw material prices, several molybdenum wire production companies have raised their product prices since June. For instance, the price of Φ0.18 wire-cutting molybdenum wire has increased by 100 yuan/10,000 meters, Φ0.24 modified drawn molybdenum wire by 60 yuan/kg, and Φ0.39 modified drawn molybdenum wire by 50 yuan/kg, with some companies strictly enforcing a “payment upon delivery” policy.
On the bullish side, factors include: first, due to stricter environmental policies, higher production costs, and declining ore grades, some molybdenum mining companies have reduced capacity, compounded by limited imports of overseas ore, resulting in relatively tight spot market supply; second, despite current high molybdenum raw material prices, the rapid development of industries like automotive and military applications has encouraged several steel companies to tender for ferromolybdenum. On the bearish side, the sluggish steel market and declining steel prices have heightened steel companies’ pressure on ferromolybdenum prices, subsequently impacting the price increases of other molybdenum products.
In related news, according to CCTV, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced on June 13, 2025, that it will impose tariffs on various steel-based household appliances, including dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators, effective June 23. A 50% tariff on most countries is expected to affect the import of these steel-derived products, potentially driving up consumer prices, with industry stakeholders closely monitoring developments.
