Molybdenum market update on May 8, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market in China maintains a relatively positive outlook, with high shipment initiative from molybdenum mining companies and concentrated ferromolybdenum tendering by steel companies driving stable product prices and decent market trading activity. Today, prices for molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and molybdenum powder are approximately 3,500 yuan/ton-degree, 229,000 yuan/ton, and 418 yuan/kg, respectively.
From the supply side: first, with stable weather conditions and favorable raw material prices, molybdenum mining companies are maintaining an orderly production pace, with capacity output remaining relatively stable; second, despite a weak international molybdenum market and slight declines in global molybdenum prices, limited liquidity has restricted China's molybdenum product imports. In Q1 2025, China's molybdenum product imports totaled 21,329.20 tons, down 12.97% month-on-month.
From the demand side, post-May Day holiday, steel companies have shown increased inquiry and procurement activity. Recently, steel companies tendering for ferromolybdenum include Baosteel Baoshan, Jiangsu Shagang, Shanxi Taigang, Shouguang Juneng Special Steel, China First Heavy Industries, Heyi Technology, Erzhong Equipment, and Zhongtian Steel, with tender prices around 224,000 yuan/ton.
According to the Steel Association, in March 2025, the CSPI average was 94.67 points, down 1.34 points month-on-month (a 1.40% decrease) and 13.58 points year-on-year (a 12.55% decrease). The long products index averaged 96.19 points, down 2.28 points month-on-month (a 2.32% decrease) and 13.58 points year-on-year (a 12.38% decrease). The flat products index averaged 93.13 points, down 1.18 points month-on-month (a 1.25% decrease) and 14.18 points year-on-year (a 13.21% decrease).
